The debut album from American alternative rock band The Strokes, gets a kick start from ‘Is This It’ , the title song of this album, it features a hypnotic bass line with deep and emotional vocals by Julian , and intriguing subject of the lyrics set the tone for this album. ‘The Modern Age’ carries all the characteristics of garage rock, with all its defiance and abrasive guitar yet melodic guitar riffs.

‘Soma’ is a subdued track , with high pitched vocals by Julian Casablancas.The guitar riffs
are steady carrying the garage rock feel.The Strokes find melody within all this noise and makes these songs one of the best melodious garage rock songs ever.’Barely Legal’ is song for the slackers and all the carefree souls around.The song carries a particularly sarcastic tone.All the songs have lyrics describing love in modern times, and its casual nature.

‘Someday’ keeps in line with the style of this album and maintains the position of a casual observer.The songs which appear to be casual and non-Chantal have a much more stronger and deep emotional impact on the listeners who can empathize with the subjects of these songs,this intensity builds with every song.The songs though casual in approach are not as light heart ed as they seem.’Alone Together’ has twisting chord progression and stylish vocals, keeping the intensity of the album at the same high.The innovative and crazy bass lines are hauntingly beautiful.

‘Last Night’ is a beautiful ballad about loneliness and alienation in present time , the track has an absolutely amazing tempo and progression with vocals that deliver the song straight to your heart.’Hard To Explain’ is another innovative excursion in garage rock.Managing all this noise and melody seems to be a breeze to the Strokes.’New York City Cops’ is another beauty from this album , with twisting chord progressions and highly energetic vocals. ‘Trying Your Luck’ seems to have slackened a little , but that’s only on the hard abrasive guitar riffs front, the lyrics and the bass lines are as intense as ever, with the guitar returning to its to usual loudness as the song climaxes.’Take is or Leave it’ is the final song of the album and shows no intention of letting go. The album ends on a high note with this intricate track.

This album is one of the best albums of all time , and it has done its genre ‘ garage rock revival ‘ proud. ‘Is This It’ is an intense album, with every song taking the intensity meter a unit higher.Lyrically sound , with complex musical textures , this album is a rare one to come by.
